Chinese patent languages
The single official language recognized by CNIPA is Chinese. The CNIPA patent application guidelines explicitly state that [..] the patent application documents and other documents shall be in Chinese. Application documents which are written in foreign language shall be translated into Chinese. The Chinese text of the patent application submitted by the applicant shall be taken as the basis of examination. The foreign language text of the application submitted by the applicant at the time of filling the application shall have no legal effect
. These documents include all the main parts of a patent application, such as claims, description, drawings, etc.
The only exception to this rule is evidence and certificates manufactured or provided by government departments in other countries, so translating the patent to Chinese is imperative.
